After running norton anti-virus and yahoo spyware remover, my machine appears
clean, but my desktop is blank other than the background - no start button,
task bar, or desktop icons. Using task mgr, I can run everything, and
machine is running much better than before norton/yahoo clean ups, but i
can't get the desktop/taskbar/start button back. Can someone help? Thank
you.

Dave,

I have almost exactly the same problem. Except I cannot run "explorer.exe"
from task mgr, says it cannot find the file, even when browsing to it. But
IE's explorer functions allow me to browse the local box...

Has anyone seen this??

THis same thing happened to me yesterday. Explorer.exe would not start up..I
could only access items by running them from the Rum Prompt in the Task
Manager. It turns out I had a W32/Nsag.B virus! Well I reformatted the C
drive, left all my other partitions intact and all was ok last night. Now I
booted up today and all my other 4 partitions are gone and showing as 177gb
of free space! I have no clue WTH is going on! Argh!

I found a fix, this worked for me so I'm sharing...good luck!

Delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File
Execution Options\explorer.exe

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File
Execution Options\iexplorer.exe
