I'm in the process of spec'ing out a system for DV editing using Premiere. I'm trying to get the whole system for around $2000 which rules out certain fun things like RT cards and dual mobo's. I already have sw licences and only need HW.

I have no intention of overclocking or playing games with this machine, I need something stable (mac/linux fans feel free to email me directly and spare the forum).

After reading reviews here, this is what I'm leaning toward. Comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Win 2000
AMD XP 1500+ (faster if the budget permits)
Abit KR7A-133
2x 512 MB DDR PC2100 ECC Registered
ATI Radeon 8500
2 7200 RPM HDs in either paired 60GB RAID or a 40 GB boot disk & 80+ GB scratch disk.
Sound card (brand ?)
Network Card (brand ?)
Firewire card (brand ?)
DVD/CD-rw (brand ?)
FDD

Crucial doesn't guarentee the Abit board can handle Registered 512MB DDR's, does anyone have experience either way?
With the radion 8500, is the LE version enough?
A sound blaster Audigy is probably overkill, what would be a suitable $50-$75 model with good driver support?

Thanks for your time and input.

If thats 2000 american a dual board is most certanily within range.

A good dual motherboard is around 300 bucks.(with some older ones for less than 200)

And 2x athlon mp 1600's are 157x2=314$

Very doable with 2k.

If your not interested in games you do not need a Radeon 8500 AT ALL.
with $2000 you could base your setup off of a Matrox RT2500. Newegg.com sells it for $759.
Heres little something I threw together at newegg just for kicks:
Matrox RT2500 $759
Athlon XP 1700+ Retail $124
Abit KR7A-133Raid $142
1 Gig of Corsair PC2400 ram (2 512 Sticks) $378
1 Western Digital WD200BB 20 gig 7200 RPM hard drive $68
2 Western Digital WD800BB 80 gig 7200 RPM drives $266
Visiontek Geforce 2 GTS-V $48
Hercules Fotissimo II sound card $32
3com 905CX-TXM 10/100 $34
Enermax CS-003-A106+ Case with 300W power supply $60
Fedex Express Saver shipping to my house $49.60 *grin*
Total $1960.60
For a video editing machine you want the best video capture card you can get, so if you have to get a slightly slower video card, and slower CPU it can be worth it. The RT2500 is an unbelievable card for capture and editing with Premiere 6.0
I would build a machine with 3 hard drives because you can install the OS on the 20 gig, and then run the other two hard drives in RAID-0 for a real nice speed increase, not to mention it'll show up as one giant 160 gig drive (you want LOTS of space for video editing hands down)
I chose the Corsair ram because it is VERY high quality and ECC ram will decrease your performance and I don't think you would need it for video editing (if you feel you absolutely need it I'm curious why)
3com makes excelent network cards so I don't think I need to explain myself there.
And then only a Visiontek Geforce 2 GTS-V because you don't need gaming power and it'll save you some cash, and then the Fortissimo II sound card is an excelent performer for the price.
I realize I skipped out on the DVD burner but I personally would edit and output back to a mini DV record deck and use a separate piece of hardware to turn it into a DVD. Although this might not give you the ability to do special menus and stuff. All this is worth it to have the RT2500 though, it would be an extremely kick bootay video editing rig.

I myself have a KR7A-RAID with one primary 80 gig running the OS, and two 40 gigs in RAID-0 for video capture, and with a simple pinnacle systems Studio DV card I captre, edit, and export to VHS with quality that rivals the Casablanca NLE (non linear editors) that I used to use when I was in high school. (By the way those Casablanca buggers cost around $5000-10,000 according to my old TV productions teacher)
Another option for video capture card would be the Pinnacle systems DV500 capture board which is $470 at newegg. I haven't researched this capture board as much as the Matrox but I've heard good and bad things about it. If you really want to know how it performs go ask on the Pinnacle forums. And getting this card would allow you to capture from analogue and firewire just like the RT2500, but because of its price would then allow you to get a DVD burner (newegg has one of these nicelly price for $299 (the panasonic LF-D311SC)

I forgot to add in a floppy, but eh, just throw in another $10 to the price

If you have any further questions I'd be happy to help
