Hi there,
I have recently had to format the hard-drive on my computer and an
error which had occurred the last time I had to format has re-appeared
which seemed to have disappeared over time (last time around)
The main problem that after logging into Windows I find is that when I
right-click on a folder and select "Properties" the box doesn't show.
Obviously this isn't the first thing you do when you get a new PC, I
found this when I was having problems installing new software, but it
can happen intermittently and I can't place my finger on what is
causing it.
The steps that I performed on first re-formatting it:
I installed Windows XP SP2 (from restore disk), AOL 9.0, Norton
Internet Suite 05, and do the process of updating the virus definitions
and running Microsoft Update. It was after I ran and installed all
20-odd updates from MS that after the restart of my machine and
re-running MS updates the download process is slowed down to a crawl
(despite a 2MB ADSL connection) and the install process can take upto 4
hours for something as simple as MSN messenger that is if it doesn't
timeout first.
I figured this was an Installshield error and read other newsgroup
threads on updating Installshield and checking that certain folders
were not marked as read-only. Upon selecting the properties of the
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Installshield folder the property dialog
does not appear. I tried to get the properties box of other folders and
nothing. Despite this I can go into IE and the internet is running fine
(Yes fine through IE but not MS Update) then about 4 hours later (if I
haven't lost the rag with my computer and switched it off) all the
Property boxes will magically appear. I can't figure if it is a
scheduling issue a thread issue or what(??).
I do believe that it is not an Installshield issue but a Windows XP SP2
or related updated. I was hoping that someone might have came across
this problem before.
Thanks for any help in advance as I am banging my head off the monitor
on this one.
