I didn't see this posted yet, so I thought I'd mention it. Linux kernel 2.6.0 is available now. Ladies and gentleman, Linux on the desktop has arrived. I tried it on my RedHat 9.0 box, and the desktop feels so much faster I'm in shock. Anyone who thought Gnome 2.2 was slow should try it with 2.6 and the ntpl libraries. I'd expect the next round of distro versions to include this (maybe along with KDE 3.2).

If you want to try it out, use a mirror, a .torrent, or see if there's a package available anywhere for your distro. Newbies can expect some headaches if compiling from source on a previously 2.4 machine - some other stuff needs updated.

Sweet. Just in time too. I'm about to re-install linux as I just got a new system. A lot of people have been raving about 2.6.0-test11 so now that final is out I can take the plunge. I hear that if it's USB and you plug it in, it works automatically. This is huge.

Well I just got gentoo installed with the 2.6.0 kernel. Everything loaded up nicely, I had no problems with my SATA drives (yet) and everything works well so far.

Grub gave me some weirdness though, but that's non kernel related. Now I just gotta build xfree and all that graphical stuff which will undoubtedly take the rest of the night :)

I've been using test7 for a while. I'll install the release version asap. I like 2.6. Its got built in support for my gigabit ethernet card.

I hear a lot of things in it are made abstract, and sort of modularised. As in you can have a kernal with no ui tidbits. Great if you want to make a router box or something.

Its also supposed to have really good support for smt, numa and a whole load of other things I don't understand.

Actually, you're in luck. Mandrake 9.2 has a 2.6.0 kernel in the contrib files. :)

ok i'm a super newbie, what is a contrib file, and how easy are they to install.

i think i would crap my pants trying to compile a kernal or somthing but RPM's i can manage to do (coz they are easy :p)

can it be done anything like that without much setting up and mucking around LOL

"Contrib" is a section on the Mandrake FTP mirrors containing user contributed packages (but not on PlanetMirror, among others). Have a poke around with an FTP client and you'll see what I mean. When you've found it, you can add that location to the package manager and then it's easy, just select kernel-2.6 and it'll download and do the rest.

Yeh. You fire up Mandrake Control Center, go to the Software Management panel, then launch Software Media Manager. You can then add a medium - the medium being the HTTP/FTP site. Once the medium has been added and updates itself, you can go to RPMDrake and install the packages.
