Hey guys...I know it can be a matter of preference...but I'm building a new PC on a budget and was wondering what the best card I could get for the money was...for example to my understanding there are no games out or on the near horizon that will require the new ti 4600 128 MB card...I want a card that will run everything availiable now to it's "full" potential and perhaps be competitive for a year or so and can't afford to put all of my money into a video card. Thank you

there's an <b><font color=red>ATI</font color=red></b> radeon 8500 retail for around $150-$160....it gives you the performance of a gf3 ti500 for the price of the gf3ti200...now thats best bag for the buck...

<b><font color=red>ATI</font color=red>'s drivers are like a broken faucet, they both keep on leaking...</b>

If you have enough money for a Ti500 then I'd suggest spending a tad extra and getting the Ti4400 that'll blow everything except its older brother out of the water. You can get them for a real good price off of www.pricewatch.com

well full potential varies because if you have a 14 inch monitor and can only run 1024x768 thats your performance roof, if you have a 19 inch monitor and can run 1600x1200 its completely different. If you want to be able to run 1280x1024 with all quality turned up I'd say you need to go with a Ti4400 or Ti4600, MAYBE Ti500 Radeon 8500 minimum. For the minimum Radeon 8500 would obviously win out because of its better price.

If my response is brief and vague its because the info you provided is too!

too bad the gf4 doesnt fully support dx 8.1...unlike the R8500....which does...
and the gf4 doesnt have anything like truform...unlike the R8500...

too bad the GF4 totally rapes the R8500
The Ti4400 outperforms the R8500 by 5-10% for twice the price.

..Too bad ATI is about to release the significantly higher clocked RV250.

Is that so? Which benchmarks? On THG, The Ti4400 was raping teh R8500 by a lot more than that, and with first revision drivers. In teh final aquanox AA, theoretically it's infinetly faster than the R8500 if Ti4400 can run it, and the R8500 can't. Please, don't even start w/ bs that the R8500 is almost as good as a GF4 Ti4400. This is the same bs I got some time ago, with people saying "Oh yeah, my Radeon 32MB is as fast as a GF3"!!!

Hmm, they were using the 6025 drivers. That's ancient news. After the 6025 were the 6032, 6037, 6043, 6043 rev. 2, and the 6052. From the 6043 up, there are huge improvments in performance.

I did post GLExcess (basically the OpenGL equivalent of 3DMark2001) benchies way back. Search for them.

See what I mean? We have another thread starting from recommending a card to some b/s about whose card is better or which one is theorectically better and on and on it goes. Can't we just stop somewhere?

For the guy who wanted a recommendation, I'd wait till the end of the summer/early fall if you can cause then R300 and Next-gen Nvidia (which probably won't be called GF5 here's a site: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/story.html?id=1017201913 ) will probably released.

Actually, nVidia isn't going to release a new graphics card in the summer, and ATI won't release the R300 til the fall. ATI is about to release the RV250 however. As it's name suggests, it's merely a higher-clocked R8500 but significantly higher clocked.

Sure maybe the current version of the r8500 but what about rv250 we will have to wait and see, the gf4 cannot touch the radeon's in terms of performance to price ratio. This is why ATI continues to errode away Nvidia's market share.

Lol, well for me the GF4 wasn't something big. The GF3 was b/c it introduced new technologies, but the GF4 was just a speed demon version of the GF3. The GF5 is something totally different, and that's what I'm interested in, because it's usually cards that introduce the new stuff that may not be crazy ass in processing power (ie, the GF2 Ultra has more raw power than GF3) but has new features, which when utilized let it play new games w/o problems.
