Hi
I recently took out my old voodoo5 5500 and replaced it with a gainward geforce4 mx440. Wen i booted up with the 440 however, the bios posted but only got to the spot where it is "checking NVRam..." it beeps a couple times randomly and stops there. I put my old voodoo5 back in and it is now working fine. I tried BIOS updates to no avail. I also tried putting it in a different mobo of the same type and brand and got the same problem. Here's what im runing:
ECS K7S5A (SiS735)
Athlon XP 1600+

any suggestions?

sagas99,

I have the same motherboard and an athlon as well. I purchased a geforce4 ti 4400 and it wouldnt work in mine at first. Then I put it in an older system and it worked fine. The reason for this is that my older system mobo/cpu needed a lot less power from the power supply. So I bought a 420 PWS and it came right up. What wattage is your PWS?

Interesting Development.. If i let the PC on with the geforce4.. it boots into windows, i can hear the startup sounds, but the BIOS post remains. What is this!?

I dont think the mx440 would take more power than the voodoo5, would it? the v5 has a spot for a power cable in as well but the gf4 just uses the agp slot power

by the way, its 300W

It may be a power related issue if your just running a 300w PSU. Most consider that an extreme minimum. These boards seem to gel better with a higher quality 350w PSU or higher. Mine is running with the minimum hardware (no cdrw, etc.) and a 300w PSU and it gets kinda flakey at times.
What brand of PSU do you have? generic?
What other hardware do you have running (ie.. extra hd's, cdrw, and so on?

The GF4, A network card, SB Live, CDRW, 1 20 gig HD, and a floppy

yeah its generic.. If i were to upgrade it, would 400W be enough?

Yeah, 400w would be fine. Even if the PSU isn't the problem it would probably be good to get a bigger one for future uprades. I'd be willing to bet that's your problem though.

Buy a nice powersupply. I'm running a 400W Antec and the system runs great. The only person I know who is running a K7S5A on a generic 300W is HonestJohn, but I don't know what videocard or components he has.

I was running my k7s5a system on a good-quality Antec 300W, and it just barely ran. I upgraded to a 430W EnerMax and my sytem is much happier. I didn't need that much power, but I figured if I was spending the money anyway why not spend a little more and get something with headroom for the future?
