Sometimes if I open a file with certain applications, then close the application, windows will not allow me to delete or rename the file, giving me an "access denied" error message. This is after closing the application, which should release any file locks the app had.

Is there any way to unlock the file lock so that I can rename or delete it?

What file, and what applications?

Do you have the same problem after rebooting? How about after ending and restarting the Explorer.exe process with the Task Manager?

Simple enough...startup by using the F8 key and choose safe mode. Login as Admin, then go into the directories of the files you cannot access. Right click on them and check the properties and security of those directories. Ensure that the security is inheritable for subdirectories and make sure that you have access to them. If you do all this and find that nothing is out of the ordinary, you should be able to delete/access the files no problem.

Actually, I know how to reboot and delete/rename the file, but I was wondering if there is a way to release the lock on the file immediately without rebooting. Maybe there is a utility to enable that or something...
