Ti4200 Review. Budget Gamer's Dream?

Tech-Report.Com has the review. Looks d*mn good. I hope the retail units perform as well as the review sample (a pre-production reference model).

Don't know about the $179-$199 price. Is the Radeon 8500 a better choice for the budget minded gamer?

at $179 for the 64mb ti4200 (which is the better of the two)...it looks more tempting than the R8500 retail for $150...
according to the websites ive read...the ti4200 is a faster card than the R8500....i sure hope AMD_Man is right about the R8500 being able to equal or even beat the ti4200 with future drivers...

Yeah, the review indicates the Ti4200 has superior performance. By the way, I wonder why the 128MB Ti4200 is slower than the 64MB one.

I was thinking about visual quality, price, smoothvision (if they ever get it working), and dedicated DirectX 8 gaming. Does the 3DMark Nature test hint at the 8500's true abilities?

For me it all comes down to price. I'd buy either card if it reached $125 delivered. (I'm not holding my breath). Until then, I'm just hanging on with a Geforce2 card. I can't justify spending more for the amount of game playing I do.

I wonder why the 128MB Ti4200 is slower than the 64MB one.

It has slower ram on it to make up for the extra cost of haveing MORE ram. Kind of silly I know, but nvidia makes the card not me.
Ti4200 64 meg version is 500 MHz I believe, and 128 meg version is 444 MHz according to what I saw off a link from hardocp.

If my response is brief and vague its because the info you provided is too!

Yeah, if ATI would release "official" drivers more quickly Tom would use them and we could really see what Radeon could do...

Well the nature shows ATi Pixel Shader in action remember its DX8.1 pixel shader. Compared to the GF4 Ti's 1.3 thats DX8.

Yeah i want the to see some 6043 drivers. When my site is up, im making sure i use the best drivers

I know Windows 98 is not officially supported but do the Radeon 8500 drivers work under Windows 98SE?

Yes, the latest drivers for Win9X/Me is 9023.

The latest official drivers for Win9X/Me are the 9016, but I recommend the 9021 driver leak.

Thanks. I don't have an 8500 but it's good to know that Windows 98 is supported.

Having to upgrade the OS would have swayed my decision.

Actually Win98 was the main fellow for R8500. Back when the drivers were a mess, using WinXP with them gave crashes, bad image, low performance of almost 40% less. Until now that WinXP drivers are fully functional.
