Hi, any help on this would me much appreciated….

Running windows XP Pro, P4 3.2ghz, 1024mb ram, Maxtor 80gb SATA HD.

Everything seemed to be fine when I received first ever crash on system,
blue screen stop error. System auto restarted and soon after logging on
blue screen stop error repeated (this happened around 8 times). Thought
best to do a replace install of the OS via boot from CD as I was not
able to get the system to run for more than a few minutes without the
fatal error re-occurring. Had an error message during re-install to say
that setup had performed maintenance on the hard disk and would restart,
ok, restarted and continued setup until about 90% way through copying
files for installation I had repeated errors of files not copying
correctly with prompts to retry, skip or cancel. After retrying multiple
times I decided to skip the problem files (12 or so dll files) and see
if the install would be successful which it wasn’t. Attempted re-install
again and again, same problems.

I now have a system that will not start and refuses to re-install the
OS, decided to try a clean install on a new replacement hard drive
(after managing to rescue my files by hooking up the HD to another
system) still having the same problem, files will not copy on setup for
the installation, even tried an old copy of windows ME just in case my
XP pro cd was faulty but still cannot get through installation without
errors and failures! I haven't a clue what to do next....

Again, I would be grateful for any help

Many thanks

chris

To summarize:

1) System A - faulted many times, wiped and reinstalled OS, but it
crashes before you can complete the installation of the OS.

2) System A - New Hard Drive - Trying to do as in #1 above, same result,
crashes before OS is completely installed.

3) System A - Different OS - Same as above #1 or #2

So, you've got it narrowed down to Hardware, unless you're installing
the OS on the PC while connected to the Internet and it's getting the
exact same infection at the same place (which is VERY unlikely).

I would suggest that you have one of two problems:

1) Heat - this could be dirty fans, fans not working, or a PSU that's
going bad.

2) Motherboard / Memory problem.

I can't tell you which, but since you've already replaced the drive,
already tried two OS installs, etc... It sure looks like overheating (as
indicated by you being able to get part way into the restore) or a bad
motherboard/Memory....
