Win XP networking problem

I am having 2 computers which i need to connect by lan. In downstairs i
have 2 lan cards one for the net and the other for the local LAN. Now
the local lan connects to the other computer upstairs. I am having the
net connection on downstairs computer. Both the computers are loaded
with xp sp2. I configured the down machine with the windows network
setup wizard and specified as that others computers connect to this
computer for net access. Now in the upstairs i did same but chose the
computer connects to net from other computer/gatway. Now whenever
earlier i used to do this it worked fine. But i did fresh install and
unable to network the two computers. Can an one suggest what might be
the problem?
