My Docs. file problems

Hello
Hoping that I'm addressing the correct Newsgroup and that someone can assist
me.
When I open a particular folder in My Docs. it shows five files. When I open
four of these files they appear in a format that I cannot read. I'll send
what the folder shows for all five, with the best description I can give for
what comes up for each when I open them - somewhat lengthy, but I'm hoping
to include whatever info you may require.
Description of:

File 1 hpoth07
DAT FILE
1 KB

When I open it the header reads
Microsoft Word hpoth07 (Read-Only)

The body appears to be notepad - like characters that are undecipherable to
me

File 2 SFX5D2
MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENT
350KB

When I open it the header reads
MICROSOFT WORD SFX5D2 (READ-ONLY)

The body is as per file 1

File 3 SFX5D2
TEXT DOCUMENT
194 KB

When I open it the header reads
SFX5D2 Notepad

The body is as per file 1

File 4 hpoth07
1x1
TIF IMAGE

when I open it the header reads
Windows Picture And Fax Viewer

The screen is blank

File 5 SFX 5D2
Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Document
183KB

When I open it the header reads
Adobe Reader [SFX5D2 pdf]

The body of this is a letter that I can read.

I am using XPHome, SP2.

If anyone can tell me what I have done wrong, and if possible how to correct
and prevent it from happening in the future I would greatly appreciate it.
One thing further - please bear in mind that should you require further
information or me to follow your instructions, you will likely have to give
me step by step steps to follow.

Thank you in advance for any assistance offered

Terry

Thanks for responding.
When I right click each file and check Properties I see the following:
Files 1 and 2 - Microsoft Word
File 3 - Notepad
File 4 - Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
Hope this is what you wanted .
Off to work right now, will check for suggestions when I return.
Thanks again
Terry

Many files do not contain information easily interpreted by a typical
computer user. To open them you need the programme used to create the
file. Just because a programme like Notepad may open a file does not
mean that it will disclose the contents in a meaningful format.

A file with a DAT file extension could be created any one of a number of
programmes - see link:

Thanks for your time and assistance. It's obvious to me that I am out of my
league and require some 'sit beside me instruction'. I have looked at the
two links you provided - thank you - but a lot of it is beyond my
comprehension.

To your - and all ( volunteered and unpaid ) who assist us less
xperienced - benefit the info provided by you does steer me in a direction
to the exact help I will have to pay for.

All part of the learning experience.

Thanks again for your time.
