WIn 2k Pro and HT

I am currently running windows xp pro. I am sick of it eating up all the ram. Was thinking of dropping my os down to win 2k pro but I have heard that win 2k pro does not effectively use Hyper Threading technology can someone explain the possible problems that might occur with a down grade to win 2k pro

Then I'd suggest you give some thought to tweaking the OS so that it is lean and mean. You can, with a little effort, get WinXP running just as fast and smooth as Win2K, and have it use nearly the same amount of memory at startup.

Turning off unnecessary <A HREF="http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm" target="_new">services</A> will also make a large difference in performance and the amount of memory consumed ... and BTW, this also applies to Win2K.

If you do decide to downgrade to Win2K, you'll need to disable Hyperthreading in the BIOS before installing the new OS. You'll also need to do some research to discover if all your current applications will run in the older operating system environment, and the same goes for drivers, especially for third-party components. You probably won't discover many conflicts of this nature, considering the core similarities between the two operating systems, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Using HT with Win2k shouldn't be a big problem. I've used it at work with my computers. The only problem that I have is when I have someone running a few programs, HT then screws up. It works good if you're using 1-2-3 programs, but if you get more open it can get tied up and screwed. This is coming off of people using programs like Microstation and Autocad who are having these problems.
Always start with HT off because a lot of programs (maybe even Win2k/WinXP, not sure off-hand) will recognize HT as multiprocessors and not a single processor.
