Dell has the following option available when configuring a Dimension
9100:

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition backup CD [add $10 or $1/month2]

Is this the Microsoft OS CD that they used to include, but then you
had to ask for by telephone?

Or burn your own from an image on the hard drive. The inspiron 6000

Dell has gotten cheaper like everyone else, possibly with some incentive from
Microsoft, who now do not have a leg to stand on when they claim you should have
a "genuine" Windows XP CD with hologram. Pay the $10. It's worth saving the
time.

Should be 'real' XP. Good to know they're offering that option now.
