All of these games were mentioned in early issues of Nintendo Power. I
never played them, but I recall their NP articles fairly vividly and
suddenly am interested in trying them now. You may remember the games even
if you never saw the NP article:

One: An old NES RPG. The NP article showed large screenshots of the
character classes, such as "Paladin: Fights like a lion and knows some
clerical spells." and was a woman with puse hair, a sword, puse and white
armor and a heart on her shield. The Knight was a guy in blue who had a
spiky-pronged helmet, and I think he casted no spells. There were two
spellcasting types, a Cleric (probably equiv to Final Fantasy's white mage)
and a Wizard (equiv to FF's black mage). The character designs were
somewhat manga-esque, so I'm guessing that it was developed in Japan (it was
1988 or 1989, long before American art was imitating manga style). The
article also mentioned that the game had time travel.

Two: A NES game that seemed to be either an action game or an RPG, maybe
both. Definitely manga-style artwork in-game, although for it's US release
in the late 80s all the printed illustrations were replaced with American
artwork. It was about a family of wizards (or maybe just the oldest guy in
the family was a wizard), and I think it let the player choose which person
he wanted to be. One screenshot showed all the family members sitting
around a table at home, and there was a painting of their deceased
grandfather, or maybe great-grandfather, on the wall. The people sitting
around the table were a father, mother, daughter, son, the dog/blob Pochi,
and maybe a couple others. The family members had interestingly weird names
that were almost all consonants, I think they were Old European -> Romaji ->
English. The main piece of artwork in the NP article showed all the family
members and their dog/blob standing together, all facing towards some threat
off the page with grim faces. I think the name of the game was Guardian
something (not Heroes) or maybe Legacy of a Wizard.

Three: I think a year or so later NP mentioned another NES RPG where the
character classes are distinguished by virtues such as Humility, Valour,
Courage, etc. I think the article even put these virtues into some sort of
circular Venn diagram. It might have been an Ultima game.

The last one sounds definetly like an Ultima game, in fact its just like
Ultima 4 on PC which im pretty sure was released on a console back then (I
wasnt a console player at the time). IIRC is was Ultima: Quest for / of the
avatar.

Not sure, but this may be Ultima: Exodus (port of Ultima III). When I get
home tonight I'll see if I can find the article in NP to check.

Legacy of the Wizard is right.
