On a new USB extension cord I read that the max for joysticks is 10' or else damage may occur. Is this something I really need to worry about? I'm only going to be at a total of 12 feet. I need to extend the USB for my MS Sidewinder FF wheel.

Any problems here? Why would cable length cause damage?

I have seen them. They are just usb extension cords.
I cant remember what I saw it in other than it was a computer supply magazine you get at work and in the cables section. It may have been cdw. Anyway the cable was 6 feet for a total of twelve and about 20 bucks.

I don't know about damage from too long a cable but you do get signal and power degredation but that is after 15 feet. Longer than that and you have to add a powered hub to extend it further. I think it mainly has to do with loss of power along the line over long distances. If your wheel requires a lot of power, it may not have enough to operate properly. If that is the case, then you will need to get a powered hub to extend it further.
