I thought I would post this info, in case someone else observes the
same behavior.
My Dell 2001FP (20" LCD display) has run beautifully for almost
exactly a year. According to my records, I installed it on 7/22/2004.
Over the weekend, the unit started to run at 1024x768 over its DVI
interface, and claimed that it was a VSC (Viewsonic) VX500. However,
when I tried the VGA interface, the correct hardware was detected.
This behavior was repeated over several different PCs as well as
an Apple PowerBook. Running factory reset from the setup menu and
leaving all power and cables disconnected for several hours did not
change things.
Running on a Linux machine, the X server startup information below
tells the story -- the DVI interface is connected as "Monitor1"
simultaneously with the VGA interface as "Monitor2". Curiously,
the EDID data seems to match all of the VX500 specifications that
I found on the net. This suggests to me that there's some ROM +
flash setup that's common to a whole bunch of different LCD monitors
and gets programmed in at manufacturing time and it this somehow
reprogrammed itself overnight.
It looks like the story will end happily. Since the 2001FP is still
under warranty (just barely), Dell is sending a replacement unit.
Thank you, Dell!
Romain
