Backup Stops @ 64% won't run

I just recently installed windows 7 64 bit Pro and a week later the program wanted to backup my system it gets to
64% and locks up and won't go any further. I have ran chkdsk on C: drive (my windows drive) along with scannow
and found no errors. Windows 7 is new to me and I need some help. I also had considerable amount of difficulty in
getting the "system restore" to work I had to boot from the MS CD and run it from there?

More info on this I was able to backup to a portable outboard drive, appearently there is some kind of issue with
my "D:" drive it's a WD1002FAEX with very little data on it. I'm gonna wipe it clean and try the backup there again.

I'm sorry for jumping the gun again to get help. Is there a way to delete some of my blunders post? In any case I was able to find out that
I was trying to back up a "D:" drive to itself and the backup program doesn't like that. I will just use another more user friendly program
and or backup to an outboard drive.
