trying to format W2K on a "possibly defective" HDD , i go through the four FDD boot disks, then the CD rom starts to load,....then blue screen comes up with the following message , with instructions to disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. (which i cannot see in BIOS)

does this error message mean a faulty HDD or something else ?.....(2 months out of warranty ) i ran the seagate diagnostic utility on this 40G barracuda ultra100 7200 drive , but it "comes up clean" ,note , this HDD always seemed to run hot :(

Disable DMA Bus Mastering in your BIOS, reset ESCD in BIOS.
Do this after restoring your defaults. Take out any unnecessary PCI cards.
Try a different CD-ROM Drive. It's possible that the Atapi.sys file is getting screwed up when reading off your CD-ROM. Try cleaning your CD too.

You can also go out with www.gateway.com and check under their downloads for a program called "GWScan" which will write 0s (zeros) to your HDD and find any bad sectors. It can do wonders when you're not sure about a hard drive.

That message means that there is a problem with 3975dfdf-ntoskrnl.exe. How you solve it I do not know.

MSI KT3 Ultra ARU mobo, AthlonXP 2000 set at 1731MHz, Windows98SE/W2K Pro, 1024MB DDR333, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro card, Audigy2ze sound, 431 watt Enermac Whisper pwr supply.

I just got a similar message and what I did was to check the hardware for problems (in the device manager). I had a problem with the video controller and when I removed it everything worked fine. I really do not understand much about it but that worked.

Good luck
