Hello,

I recently purchased a new computer;

Amd duron 1000
Asus A7V 133-C
256Meg Generic PC-133mem
IBM Desktar 60 GB
Gainward Geforce4 ti4200 (64meg)

Anyway, I got all the parts in, and threw the whole system together, put windows 98 SE on it, installed all my programs and things worked pretty well. After awhile I started to overclock my cpu, and after some success, windows decided to kill itself for some odd reason @1400 mhz. I couldn't get windows to start at all, even at default clock speeds.

So I reformat and reinstall and it works well again, however, after I install direct X8.1, everthing works fine for awhile, but then something goes wrong, and one day for no apparent reason, I start 3Dmark 2001, and it says I need a directX8 compliant videocard, and after trying to reinstall drivers, and directX8, as well as the Via 4 in 1 (438) still the same problems. Max Payne wont run either, and displays the same error message, so I know its not a 3dmark problem.

I download the nvidia 28.32 drivers and I get the error message "setup was unable to find a detected devices PCI ID in the nvids.cfg file" or something very simalar. I can only install the drivers that came on the CD, and they are the 28.32, and under display properties I can see that they are.

There is a diagnostic file that came on the Gainword CD, and it displays ome information on directX (Dxtool.exe)and it displays the following information:

Direct X 8 is installed

Direct3d version: 4.07.00.0700 DirectX 7
DirectDraw version: 4.08.01.0881 DirectX 8
Directinput version: 4.08.01.0881 DirectX 8
DirectPlay version: 4.08.01.0881 DirectX 8
DirectSound version: 4.08.01.0881 DirectX 8

So I get fed up with not being able to do anything with directX8 (dx7 games work fine, like unreal tournament) and I just reinstalled windows without reformating, just an overlay install, to reset DirectX and to start over. so after 20 minutes of installing it finishes and my directx is reset to 6.0, and I run DX81eng.exe and after it goes through and updates and restarts, I try to run 3Dmark, but to no avail... same message. and dxtool.exe displays the same information. Anyone have any idea? I'm not in the mood to reformat. Thanks for your help

Sounds like some drivers are corrupted. I would try uninstalling the 4-in-1 drivers, video drivers and DirectX then doing a clean install each.

You can uninstall the 4-in-1 drivers with the installer program, just select the uninstall option for each component.

You can use the Control Panel to uninstall the nVidia drivers but I recommend following this with a program called Detonator Destroyer which cleans up extranenous files that the uninstall process doesn't remove. You can get Detonator Destroyer at http://www.guru3d.com.

To remove DirectX you will need DirectX Eradicator or a similar program. Get it at http://www.freewebz.com/firecat/.

Remove the 4 in 1 driver. I have the same problem as well with my P3 and VIA chipset motherboard. reboot before you install the other drivers (detonator 28.32 and directX 8).

upgrading to windows xp would also solve that problem i believe.
