hi all, i've noticed several recent posts about CPU vs. video card bottlenecks. Instead of repeating the same questions, i'd like to know if a marriage betwen a GF4 Ti44/4600 and my current system would work (potential apps incl. upcoming Doom, UT, even GTA3). Doh,! Okay, it's really the same question disguised :p

Where could my system be improved? Would a GF4 be overkill for my 1.3Ghz CPU? I'm just trying to find a good balance and i'm afraid of overspending on one area. Any help is much appreciated!

Good question. I have an older system which is superior in performance to yours, a PIII 1000EB and cheap arse Radeon (original style) LE, tweaked to retail Radeon DDR spec.

Personally, I'd sell the system and build a new one.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

A Radeon 8500LE or Ti4200 would probably do pretty with that setup.

My firewall tastes like burning.

Hi, a video card upgrade would do very well, so you're right in suspecting that a new vid card like a 4400 or 4600 would help. Your particular Dell P4 system was built during the days when the Pentium 4 systems were given crappy components on purpose to make them cheaper and fool customers into thinking that their computer was fast. (since a decent cpu but crappy memory and vid card is worse than a slower cpu with good memory and vid card)

In particular, for many months, Dell advertised GF2 MX400's and MX200's and because of their deceptive name they managed to sell their systems. Remember that the GF2 MX versions were worse than the GF2 GTS and the GF2 Pro costed the same but was 40% faster.

So would a GF4 card be a good upgrade? Compared to a GF2 MX hell yeah. I would recommend a radeon 8500 to go with that. Get the one at newegg right now for $99 and read the user comments to make sure it's the one with 3.3ns memory. Total including shipping is $107, and that's much better than paying $170 for a Ti4200.

Censorship makes us so much more creative.
