Asus v8440 can't use AGP 4x

Asus V8440
OS= Win XP Home / win ME
Latest MB drivers
Latest MB Bios ( F6 )
Latest Asus drivers 29.40
Latest Nvidia driver 29.42

This is my problem, the computer will hang shortly after the windows splash screen, either before the desktop can even load or within 30 seconds. I have tried numerous combinations of drivers, both the drivers that came on the disks and also the new ones I downloaded, even the Nvidia drivers cause the same problem.
The only way I can get the system to work is if I change the AGP Mode to 2x in the Bios.
I called Asus twice and they just have me reloading the same drivers over and over, and my Emails to Gigabyte go unanswered.
Has anyone ever seen this before with this combination of cards ?

It's a problem with the chipset, some companies have found workarounds and others haven't, it used to be common but is now relatively infrequent.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?
