I was just wondering if there was a noticeable performance difference between the GeForce3 Ti500 and the GeForce4 Ti4200.

Yes there is. It's anywhere from 0% (only in QuakeIII from what I see) to about 20%, depending on resolution and game. Overall, the GF4 Ti4200 is just a better card than the GF3 Ti500 and I believe it is cheaper too.

What's the deal with lampshades, I mean it's a lamp, why would you want a shade?

I agree with Chuck 100%. The GeForce4 Ti4200 is actually a better deal than the GeForce3 Ti500. Plus you get all the features of the new GF4 GPU and hardware acceleration that the GF3 doesn't have.
