It seems to me that Bliz has made some stupid patch decisions. It used
to be that by level 80 any char could solo anywhere with relative ease.
This made folks complain that hell was too easy so we got 1.10. Now
hell is too hard so we get loads of inflated items, mostly runewords.
Now hell will be doable again, but at what cost? I dunno. It seems that
future D2-type games would do well to learn from this. They should
never have made so many uniques, and especially never made so many damn
runewords.

Actually, one of the main problems was that certain areas (Durance 2,
Moo Moo Farm) offered way too much reward for way too little risk. Hell
in 1.09 wasn't "too easy" for the average player, just for people who
played a lot, and they skipped most of Hell anyway. It also allowed for
experimental builds to work nicely and offer a challenge.
1.10 greatly reduced the number of viable builds, and in many places the
game is no longer fun. It's not necessarily harder or more difficult,
it's just a lot more tedious and thus boring.

Considering that nobody with the necessary competence seems to be
interested in making a D2-type of game, even though D2 has been such a
huge success, doesn't give me much hope that this will happen.

I like uniques and runewords, just not the overpowered ones that make
rare items nearly always inferior. But that's been a problem ever since
LOD came out. Was different before.

I like uniques and runewords too, but not at the expense of all the
other items. Since D2 already uses a prefix/suffix system, wouldn't it
have made more sense to simply make runes give one of those when used?
This way people could craft their own custom rares. Every combination
would be a "runeword", and the system would still be balanced. Perhaps
limited combinations of prefix/suffix runes would offer some kind of
hidden bonus, like sets.
It's a moot point, I know, but it would have been nice.

My my, doesn't Michael Vondung <mvondung@gmail.com> look good in that

Me too! In fact, I'd say runewords are one of, if not my favourite things
about the expansion pack. In fact, I'd like to see more, more, more
runewords! Ideally I'd like to have ones that don't appear to have been
designed by a crackhead, but I'll take what I can get. :-)

Those who know me wil realise that I don't post followups like this
very often - but wtf....!
What do you want for chrissake - a game that's easy to get through, or
one that can't be completed unless you have the reactions of a ninja,
and three hands/keyboards/mice to boot.
As someone who has got more enjoyment out of this game that almost any
other form of entertainment, I *wish* people would give the guys that
developed it more credit. Sure they could have improved on it in a few
areas, and sure they could have done more to 'protect the innocent' in
online games, but if you take the time to look at the actuality,
absolutely *none* of the problems that gets mentioned here (with the
possible exception of the nm FE bug on the realms) is one that cannot
be avoided by a particular playing stance.
The game has probably had its day, and I hope that the people who
developed it are still able to bring a suitable successor to the
marketplace. I don't think it's here yet (he says looking at the two
copies of Sacred sitting on the bookshelf - and waiting for WoW to be
released over here) but I can't wait to see what the original Diablo
development team come up with next

Instead of making better runewords that only ladder players can get,
they should have made better mods that everyone could get.

I understand what you are saying for a character like a Trapper that can
kill effortlessly at a distance without risk. For a melee char that
doesn't have great gear, hell level in 1.10 is a lot more tactical because
you need to maneuver against the monster pack, terrain, and your party to
take on only a manageable number of monsters at one time. So I actually
enjoy playing a char that needs to stand shoulder to shoulder with his
merc to fight effectively.
