Mostly core speed and memory speed. A retail 8500 has speeds of 275/275. An OEM 8500 BBA (built by ATI) is 275/250. A retail 8500LE is 250/250. An OEM 8500LE BBA is 250/230. Ati Partner cards (you'll notice the "Powered by ATI" markings) may and do have different specs.

Performancewise, at the same speeds or overclocked to the same speeds, any two ATI 8500 variants (with the same amount of memory) should perform just about the same.

The retail ATI cards have the Rage Theater chip which offere some improved video handling but this does not affect gaming performance.

so the only diff is the core/mem clocks? or does the LE lacks some internal featurs like the hyperZII, smoothvision ETC?

I thought the retail version had DVI support but the Ati product spec doesn't mention it.

Maybe it was one of the ATI partners that added DVI.

I'm blind. The Rage Theater chip is sitting right there in front of me on my 8500OEM. There is another chip next to the GPU that is missing from my board that does exist on the retail board. The chip is about 1/4" x 1/4". I don't know what it does.

Sorry for the mistake. (I'm making a lot of these lately).

what's printed on the chip that's missing?
LOL! I can't tell you because it is missing from my video card.

The chip is immediately to the left of the GPU below the large capacitors. On my card there are traces for it but the spot is empty and unlabeled as far as I can tell at this moment. I can't pull the card because I am using it as I type this post.

In this article you can find a pic of the retail 8500. If you click on the pic you can enlarge it. This card clearly has the chip that I am talking about but the markings can't be read.
