Try the link, they've been gone for almost three weeks... :frown:

I never got a chance to try and switch from using BBIagent to Freesco, so maybe some of you might know what had happened.

I read <A HREF="http://networking.earthweb.com/netos/article/0,,12083_1107911,00.html" target="_new">this article</A> from <A HREF="http://practicallynetworked.com/" target="_new">Practically Networked</A>. It was written today, so I thought I'd ask the author of the article. She just replied back, saying that the new address is <A HREF="http://www.freesco.info" target="_new">http://www.freesco.info</A>. They must've forgot to renew the domains or something because <A HREF="http://www.freesco.org" target="_new">http://www.freesco.org</A> goes somewhere else completely different.

Thought you might like to know that Calv, but thanks for the help. I'll try that possibly tonight, like I said before. Wish me luck...

Thanks for the info, the info on that site is decent, unlike a lot of linux sites that just seem to send you round in circles! The only problem I had with freesco, is I had to run the configuration twice, since I didnt know which lan card was eth0 and which was eth1, and of course when I did it the first time, I got them the wrong way round! other than that, no problems at all, I just answered y/n to the questions I knew, the others I left as the defaults and all has been well ever since.
That site still seems to be under construction, so let me know if you cant find the download and I'll make you a login for my ftp.

Alright, I'll let you know how it goes. BTW, in case you didn't see the copy of the Freesco site on that initial link: <A HREF="http://www.freesco.info/freesco.org/" target="_new">http://www.freesco.info/freesco.org/</A>

Later...

Hey Calv,
I forgot to ask something. Do I set it up on the computer that will act as the router? Also, when I get it all setup and running, what happens if I have to turn off the router (to move it or something)? When I turn it back on, will it start up automatically, or do I need to plug a keyboard and monitor into it?

Thanks,
Bryan

router-yes
depending on the bios on the pc its running on, it may stop if it doesnt detect a keyboard or display device, but this can probably be disabled in bios. The nat/firewall starts regardless of weather you log in on the pc itslef, you can make any changes from a remote pc via a webstyle interface.

Alright, good deal. I guess once I have it set up the way I want, I don't have to worry about making a new disk or anything anymore. That answers it. Thanks! I'll try that soon enough. (I've been saying that already, I know...)

even if it all goes pear shaped, all you need to do is remove the floppy and reboot! I keep meaning to make a backup of mine but never get around to it

Dude, that setup is so comprehensive, it's confusing! Anyway, this is what I posted in the forums there, so maybe they can give me assistance. So far, no reply. (What can I expect at 1am in the morning?) I thought you might like to see what I'm dealing with. I did read that manual, and I'm not sure what kind of router my PC is. Tell me whatcha think. Thanks...

<font color=green>I'm currently using BBIagent as my floppy-based router. But, I was recommended to check out Freesco since it's much more comprehensive. Plus, it has a community of assistance behind it, opposed to BBIagent's lack thereof. The only extra feature I want is the print server, which is why I'm trying this switch. If it doesn't work, I can always boot back to the BBIagent floppy.

I looked thru the FAQ threads, in hopes of seeing any solutions that might pertain to my situation, and I did spot something. Reading a thread posted for new people who haven't installed Freesco yet, I answer these questions in this manner:

1. What hardware do I have in the machine?
It's a Dell OptiPlex GL 575 with a floppy drive, two PCI network cards (top is connected to a switch, the lower one is connected to a DSL modem), and at least 16MB of memory. I think it has 32MB, but I'm not positive (someone let me have this machine).

2. How do I connect to the internet?
Through my DSL modem. I have to enter a username and password, thru PPPoE (dynamic IP). I didn't want to have to do this everytime I turned on my main computer, so I've been using BBIagent to satisfy this need.

3. What do you want with Freesco?
A hardware firewall
A print server (when other computers get connected, they can at least be able to share the printer)
A router (so I can hook up my laptop in the living room or the bedroom, without worrying about configuring an IP address for it)
To automatically login and connect to my DSL connection

I hope I didn't ask anything that hasn't been answered. But, I have a bad feeling that I have. So, please don't flame me. I just didn't see anything about this in the manual, at least in easy to understand language.

Thanks for any help you can provide me.

Basically, I don't know how to set it up. I got some replies back to a few good links, but I didn't know I didn't make a question clear. (Oops...)

Nothing right now. I got one more final today, then I'll try again tonight. (I probably won't reply until later...)

Do you know anything about setting up PPPoE, and what type of router I'm setting up (when first setting up for Freesco)?

Thanks for thinkin' about me...

either as a dialup/leased line, or ethernet. if it doesnt work right, just reboot and re enter the config.
