the volume on taskbar

you know when you move the sliding bar to move the sound up or down on
the taskbar and the speakers would go thunk thunk, but now it dont do
that instead theres a beeping inside the computer when you move the
volume slider up or down, how do you get the thunking back?
dell 4400
win xp sp2

A thought, go to Control Panel and play with the volume controls
there. See if that might provide the fix.
