You can make a change to the registry to get any resolution you want.

!!!! BE SURE TO BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST JUST IN CASE !!!!

Hit Win + R to open the run dialog, then type "regedit" to open the registry editor.

Back up your current registry by clicking File -> Export and save to the desktop.

Now that your registry is backed up go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG -> System -> CurrentControlSet -> Control -> Video

and you will see a combination of letters and numbers like:{F72BFB3B-52E9-4B65-8AA4-D774C26BA193}

open this and you'll find "0000" which should contain two keys: DefaultSettings.XResolution and DefaultSettings.YResolution

which you can use to modify your resolution beyond your current one.

Good luck

To recover your old registry just double click on the backup icon you made on the desktop and it will reset what you just did.

Your resolution is constrained by your display. It's like buying a 16 oz cup and asking how you can put 20 oz into it. Sure you can pour the 20 oz into the smaller cup, but you won't like the result too much, and neither will your shirt.

Your display may run at a higher resolution, but you will need to scroll around the edges (it won't all fit on your screen).

If you want to run your laptop at a higher resolution, buy a larger external monitor for it.

Remove the display driver in add programs control panel, then in device manager remove the monitor driver.
reboot and reinstall display driver.
This worked for me.
