What do most people max out first skill-wise for avengers?
Vengeance?....Holy shield? Conviction?

well, if you are in pre-1.10, then veng and fana with a little zeal, then
convict and some holy shield. but then again, i doubt you are in
pre-1.10...
though, this rule should still apply. he is an aVENGer, so max out his main
skill 1st, which would be Veng. a ZEALot would max Zeal, a Vindicator would
max Smite (heh, i had to throw that one in there to mix it up). but
anyways, i always played by that for the most part.

actually, come to think of it, my best pallies were ones that i never had a
plan and just had fun with, putting points in useful skills until they
became unstoppable... anyone remember Rayau?

You want to calculate how much mana you will leech per
hit to figure out what level of Vengeance you can sustain.
Boosting Conviction helps your party and boosting either
Conviction or the synergy skills for Vengeance boosts your
damage without costing you more mana. When you get to
Act2 NM you can get a Might merc whose aura helps you
leech more.

Normally when i build an avenger i put skill points in prereq as they come
in play and then from level 1 - 6 resist fire, level 6 - 12 resist cold,
level 12 - 18 resist lightning, level 18 - 24 vengeance, level 24 - 30
holy shield, level 30 i max conviction, then max holy shield, then max
vengeance and then the res of the skills points i put in single element
resist.

This normally works ok for me and i will be at a level where i can use
high damage weapon for mana leech before vengeance starts eating all my
mana.

that used to be the limit, but i believe its worth it now to max it because
of the AR increases. when i played though (pre 1.10), i never put more than
3 or 4 actual points in it (+skills boosted it up some more).

Fair enough, I haven't noticed AR being a problem *yet*, but he *is*
only in Act 2/Normal. When he tries again to go through the
greatly-expanded Crypt (Act 5 and beyond monsters lurking near the
bottom) any problems *should* show up, or at least any that he's going
to have in Normal, but he *does* have an ungodly number of skill
points saved up, so I should still have them to add if I need to.

I'd say Conviction, for two reasons: it doesn't increase the mana cost
(as points in Vengeance does), and it reduces target defense as well as
cause them to take more damage from the elemental side of your attack.

Third reason (yeah, I can't count neither): Conviction helps the whole
party (even if you're alone it helps your merc), pumped Vengeance only
helps you.
