Okay. I have had the D2 battlechest for a while now and my kids took
home LOD to upgrade their install. The problem is every time they try to
install it continuosly asks for the play disk over and over and never
gets passed that point. Mine went in just fine. They are trying to
install over an already played and established D2 install, could this
contribute to the problem? I have no ideas on the problem and not even
sure what files to backup in case they have uninstall to reinstall the
whole thing. They don't want to lose 2 yrs worth of SP and MP
characters. Please help me help them.

Just to get this straight:
You gave the computer the play disc of Diablo2 (classic) and pressed 'enter'
after that. And then the installation got stucked?!
Because you NEED the classic playdisc for LOD installation.
If that's the problem your original play disc has a problem. But you said
you re-installed D2C over and over again. I would suggest you de-install the
game and check your hard disk for errors. Then re-install D2C and try again
with LOD.

If they don't wish to lose 2yrs worth of characters then it's a good thing
to just make some copies of them and put them on disk. This way they can
completely Un-Install D2. Do they have a copy of D2 Classic (Original) or is
it just installed and got a patch on it which allows them to play without
the disc?

That can't be the problem. I gave them all the D2 discs, install, play
and cinamatics as well as the LOD disc. They've installed this game
before. I even reinstalled it to my machine before they left with no
troubles like that or any for that matter. What errors could their HDD
have if they can play D2 original just fine. It seems to be only when
they try to install LOD into their D2 folder. Just seems odd. It worked
fine on mine not 1/2 hr beforehand.

Or check the disc for scratches. When mine was pretty badly scratched
(from 2-3 years of playing) I had that problem, a little miracle CD
repair kit that I picked up from a used CD store (only $1, I figured I
couldn't go *too* wrong) worked wonders and saved me from having to
buy a new disc. As far as what files you have to back up if you have
to re-install it, don't worry about it, the game automatically saves
your SP files, and the true MP ones are stored on Blizzard's servers
(the Open BattleNet and other MP options are just your SP characters).
Oh, also, if the disc *isn't* scratched, try being stubborn and keep
hitting Enter. I remember at least once I got the silly game to
install doing this, although it took *quite* a long time (sometimes it
wouldn't add anything more before asking again, sometimes it would add
a little bit, eventually it got everything).

Would they be saving the save folder or is there anything else that is
required in saving the characters so an uninstall can be done. I've not
done this so I'd rather be sure to do it right first time around.

Also it would not hurt to use a cd/dvd laser lens cleaner. I did and
had some very good results. After that I used it on all my DVD/cd players.

Just the save folder, the one with files in it that end with *.map,
*.key, *.d2s.

Again, unnecessary. The game automatically saves your SP characters, I
don't even think you have an option to tell it *not* to. Believe me,
folks, I went through this at least 3 or 4 times when I first got this
machine, trying (unsuccessfully) to get it to connect to BNut.

Sorry, got to thinking about this a bit more. Go ahead, save the save
folder, that *is* where all the pertinent info is, just to be sure.
But when you uninstall and the game tells you that it's saved your
characters, don't say I didn't tell you so ;-)

And don't use the saved files with your newly installed D2 before you
have at least the version you had before. (e.g. 1.06 characters loaded
on a 1.04 install can ruin your characters)

It will default to save the save file, but (at least using the XP
uninstall command) it will give you the option to remove the entire
diablo folder.

Make sure they did a full install of DII then copy over D2MUSIC.MPQ it is on
the play disk. then install LOD then update to rhe newest patch.
Then copy over the .mpq file fom lod {Video, music}.

Ok make sure at the point it asks for the play disk that they put in the D2
Play disc..they have to take out the LOD disc and insert the D2 play disc at
that point...and then when its almost finished it will again ask for the LOD
expansion disc. when that install is finished there will be an option to
ugrade LOD from mutilplayer to full install...leave the LOD disc in and
upgrade to full install. DONE.

Ok!!!!!!!! Here it is!!!! I know what this guy is talking about and some of your questions are just agrivating.
diablo 2 classic works fine.
you go to install lod.
when it asks for the diablo 2 classic play disc you place it in your cd rom.
it starts to install!!!!
then all of a sudden it stops and asks to "insert play disc"
the disc is already in and has already been used to install and play diablo 2 classic so you know it's good.
the problem occurs whether you do single player, multiple player or full install for the diablo 2 classic.
i cannot get past this point no matter what i do. i have vista 64. not sure if anything about that matters. my vista has worked awesome so far. if anyone has any soultions at all before i throw my computer, then please share!
