Hey guys, I just bought a Leadtek GF4 Ti4400 before upgrading to a Athlon XP 2100+, Gigabyte board and a new case with 300W at the least in two weeks time, but the problem at the moment is I get a black screen everytime I boot up Win 98 SE normally, I've tried everything I know and installed the drivers in safe mode then rebooting normally.

I'm pretty sure that the problem is the 200W power supply, but not to sure as it could be this old 14" monitor, but I dout that as it runs fine on my TNT2 Ultra at 1024x768 60Hz. The monitor goes black apon finishing boot up and the light goes yellow like it doesn't like the refresh rate which should be at 60Hz by default of installing the drivers.

Any help would be appreciated.

System specs:
Win 98 SE
Abit BH6 - with the last Bios released
P3 800
256MB PC133
Leadtek GF4 Ti4400
Aopen 6x DVD
Liteon 40x12x48x

their could also be a confict in the motherboards. When i went from a SIS to VIA chipset, my hd went nuts and i had to reformat it, I would peronally upgrade to at least 350W before reformating though. The GF4's tend to eat up a lot of power

"What kind of idiot are you?"
"I don't know, what kinds are there?"

300 watts might be OK for that rig. However, if you start to get POSTing problems and/or spontaneous reboots think about replacing it.

As for your present problem, do you get the Windows logo then the screen goes black? Does it boot to safe mode OK?

Clean installs of Via 4-in-1 drivers, nVidia drivers, and DirectX fixes the problem. The order is important for stability see below.

from one of my other posts...

This works for me. Clean install of Via, nVidia, and DirectX.

To do a clean install of Via 4-in-1's use the latest installer. When prompted to install each component select the "Uninstall" option. When done DO NOT REBOOT. Just run the installer a second time and let the components install.

To do clean install of the Detonators get a copy of Detonator destroyer [Edit at http://www.guru3d.com] ... Do a normal uninstall of the nVidia drivers via Control Panel then run Detonator destroyer to clean up the extraneous files.

DirectX can be uninstalled with DirectX Uninstaller but it is hard to find. If you do find it best results are had when the .inf file (that's all it is) is installed in Windows Safe Mode. Use Right-Click to install an .inf file.

I recommend you do ALL of the above clean installs whenever you change any of the following: BIOS, 4-in-1 drivers, nVidia Detonator, Direct X. This just eliminates so many problems, including poor performance, 3D crashes, resolution and color depth problems, blinking cursor on a black screen and others.

Update:

The old DirectX Uninstaller is no longer available. http://www1.freewebz.com/firecat/ has a new utility, DirectX Eradicator. This utility works for Win9X/ME/2K (but not Windows XP) where DirectX Uninstaller only worked with Win9x/ME.

At the moment I'm using the Abit BH6 which has a intel 440BX chip, upgrading to the Athlon XP and Gigabyte in two weeks time.

When I boot up, I get the windows logo and then the black screen with some system details and sound card settings etc like I normally do, then it goes black straight after that where it should be the network logon screen.

When I put back in the TNT2 Ultra everything is fine, think I'll go buy a 350W and see what happens.

Oops, I thought you had a Via chipset. My advice won't work.

You could try the updated Intel chipset drivers.

Get the Chipset Installation utility at the link below.
