Is there some sort of a benefit that I missed? I thought anyone could
post to these groups, so I don't see any added benefit of being a
"member"

Usenet groups don't have members in any formal sense.

From time to time I see posts by folks who announce that they have become
"new members of a group" but I've never figured out what they have done to
make them believe they are now "members".
