shut down freezes

After a clean install windows xp dosn't shut down.It seems to freeze at the shut down mode.I'm running norton sys works/virus 2003,Norton personal firewall.could this be a downloaded patch problem.Thanks Bruce

Doesn't shut down means there's nothing happen when shuting down or there's a BSOD?

I need to check and see what is running before it shuts down.I have seen this once and awhile but it did not happen all the time . Thanks Bruce

Do you have a DVD writer or a CD writer running? You'd need to manually eject the disc from windows by right clicking it, then choose eject. Else the windows assumed that the disc is still inside and performing write operation (normally happens to CDRW or DVD-RW(+RW)) and it won't shut down...
