ATI preps Radeon 9700 Pro

ATI announces details and a release date for its new high-end graphics card, which is expected to let ATI claim the performance crown from Nvidia.

ATI has announced the official product name and specs for its next high-end graphics card, the Radeon 9700 Pro. The Radeon 9700 was revealed a few weeks ago, and it has been trumpeted as the first ATI product to promise significantly better performance than archrival Nvidia's lineup can deliver.
ATI has finalized a few details of the card's specs since last month's preview launch. Most notably, we know now that the chip in the Radeon 9700 Pro will run at 325MHz, while the 128MB of memory will run at 620MHz. High clock speeds are an important part of performance, but the Radeon 9700's performance potential comes from its next-generation features, like the fact that it has eight pipelines for processing pixel effects, compared with four in current cards. The new card will also have 256-bit paths to memory, which doubles memory bandwidth and should prevent memory speeds from being a bottleneck.

The Radeon 9700 Pro will ship to retail stores starting August 19 and will carry a list price of $399. For more information, read our in-depth preview of the card. We'll have a full review of the Radeon 9700 Pro in the coming weeks.

Looks really sweet. I can't wait to get it. Hopefully NewEgg will have it in stock around the 20th of Sept, when I order all my parts. I can't wait for real reviews and game performace tests that show numbers and not percentages.

The 9700 will probably run at a bit lower memory-clockspeed (and perhaps chip-clockspeed) then the Pro model. At the release-happening of the 9700 they said the EST will be 399 dollars, now the EST of the 9700 Pro is 399 dollars.

that was what i was trying to point out:
Previously advertised 9700 = 9700 Pro
Previously thought 9500 = 9700 at lower specs

That's what I thought too, but the CEO of ATi actually stated that R9500 would launch in *mid Q3*... So maybe there still will be a R9500. So maybe there'll be a R9700 PRO, R9700 and R9500... Kinda like Ti4600, Ti4400, and Ti4200.
