I have enough money for a Radeon 8500 (128 or 64) or g4ti4200 (128 or 64). For playing graphically intense games, which card, and what amount of memory would be best and would last the longest before an upgrade (for future gaems, etc.)

thanks

as an ATI fan, i persoanlly would get a Radeon 8500 128mb.
but if u only cares about performance, then get the 64mb Ti4200, it out performs the 8500.

The 4200 64 would last the longest.

It is cheap, and it can overclock extremely well, overclocked to its max it will perform between a 4400 and a 4600, which will last you for quite some time.

Because the 128 meg gf ti4200s come with slower rated ram which top out around 500mhz or so(but some get to 550+) the 64 meg version has much faster ram which generally hits 550-620, 64 megs of ram at 600 will almost always beat 128 megs at 500mhz.

Both cards have the same average core overclock though(300-330)

So you see, its not worth it(unless the only game you play is jedi knight 2) to spend more on the 128 meg ti4200 over the 64 meg which overclocks further and will last longer.

I think what Mat means by "lasting longer" is that it won't be as obsolete (if you can grade obsolescence). In other words, he's predicting that future games will be more likely to play better on the Ti4200 than the Radeon.

I'd say Ti4200 128MB if you want what you described. R8500 128MB if you want to save money.

Hey, Mat, IIRC, you were the one who said with GF4 Ti's the core was more important than the RAM speeds, so since I'd say the average Ti4200 128MB RAM o/c is about 540-550, then with that extra RAM, I'm pretty sure it'll outperform in future games. For now, the 64MB will definitely be faster, but in the future, I'd think the bit slower RAM won't really hurt too bad.

I'd recommend the ti4200 128MB version since this card won't be obselete as quickly as the 64MB version or the 8500. Although I have a 64MB version since they're a bit faster, the larger memory will better handle future games. General benchmarks will show the ti4200 outperforms the 8500 in most games, so why not spend the extra $40 for the better performaning card which will "last" longer.

Yes, but the ram speed dosent hurt, also I feel 64 megs of ram @550-600 will beat 128@500 in most if not all applications, which is why I reccomend the 64 meg ti4200.

Except only 2 current games benifit from the 128 megs of ram, and several new games show no benifit, I say it is not clear that 128 will be more benificial than an extra 50-100mhz of ramspeed, which is why I advocate the cheaper, faster, 64 meg version.

I agree, I've had both a think the 64MB is a little bit faster and that's why I've stuck with it. Supposedly though games coming out next x-mas in '03 will need more ram. So I was just thinking ahead for him, unless he wants to upgrade in a year.

Personally, i am going to buy the Aopen DVC128 gf4 ti4200. It is not that expensive and it has video in and video out. It will replace my Asus GF2MX 32mb which also has tv-out, but no tv-in. The DVI support of the gf4 might also be nice in the future...
Ti4400 is rather expensive and i'm going to try and overclock this card to get the same performance.
