my boyfriend is trying something interesting, and i'm wondering if
others have tried as well.
given some of the *huge* bonuses you can get off set items, how far
have you taken a completed set in the game?
for example, my boyfriend used sigon's set on his barbarian until the
end of nightmare level. although he didn't use the shield (he had a
dual weapon frenzy barbarian that he found out didn't work very well
as a single player character in hell level), he made full use of that
set until the end of nightmare.
right now, he's building another barbarian, and equipped him with
cleglaw's set. he's debating trying to see how far he can go with it
until he knows he has to swap it out for something. he wasn't sure
about doing it at first, because it means putting his points into his
skill tree that aren't conducive to two builds he's thinking of for a
high level barb (immortal king set with the maul, or that set (or
possibly another) with the bul-kathos' children as a dual weapon), but
i told him that if he found the single sword set up didn't work, i'd
fix his skill tree with an editor instead of him starting over.
i'm just curious if anyone tried this set up and how far they got. i
think my assassin started nightmare with two pieces of the death set.
annoying, because the belt only has two levels, but the bonuses really
worked out for her. i'm now going to switch her out into something
else, because frankly, i don't think it's quite possible to keep that
set going starting in nightmare, especially with only two pieces.

I wore Irathas set on my HC skelliemancer into Hell, until about act 2 as I
recall.
The resist bonuses and % to max resists really helped me out, and the lower
AR didn't matter much as I was sitting behind a meat shield the whole time.
I only got rid of it after I found a shako, as I recall.

I very rarely use any complete set, usually bits and pieces of two or three.
Back in 1.09 my barbs used Sigon's boots/belt/gloves in Hell some, but in
1.10 any HC melee character using that much of a low level set that far into
the game is just asking for it. If your boyfriend used 5 pieces of Sigons
all the way through HC NM he's either very good or very lucky--or both--IMO.
:-)
My recently retired HC mostly MA assy--who just made Guardian, BTW--used
pieces of Iratha's and Angelic through A3 NM, and that's about as far as I'm
willing to trust any of my HC melee'ers using any of the "low-level" sets
these days.
Casters should be able to take some of the low levels farther, maybe even
all the way through Hell.

I've taken full Cathan's Traps through to act V Normal. Likewise Hsarus
set.
The problem I have with some sets is it can be difficult to ween you
character of them. Cathan's Traps is a good example. Removing it
requires getting a lot of resistances (the set adds at least 25 to
resist cold and lightning, much more to resist fire) and a good deal of
mana (over 70 mana IIRC).
