How does a throwbarb survive against hell ancients, with regards to his
throwing weapons running out... since he can't go back to town to recharge
them, how does he go about finishing the quest?

If you use axes and did put some spare points into "axe mastery",
you can switch to "non- throw attack" (Left Mouse button and RM Button).

Or you can use the weapons in your second (alternative) weapon slot.

Or you can buy (gamble) replacement throw weapons and put them in your
stash.

Did you hire a "Might" merc, to kill faster ??

Last, but not least join a multiplayer game on battle.net and let other
people help you.

Fill the empty slots in your stash with additional throw weapons. Before you
"wake up" the Ancients, put your additional throw weapons on the ground.
When you run out, just pick up a weapon from the ground, it'll automatically
equip.

Put a couple or so points in Frenzy and go melee on their ancient asses just
before you completely run out. Gimmershreds would work great for such.

You'd be well served to have at least a couple of points in Frenzy anyway,
IMO.

I just switched to Frenzy or DoubleSwing. I also carried a high damage
throwing spear and shield on switch and used Concentrate/Berserk sometimes.
