i have read about linux running on all sorts of things, palm pilots, macs, even routers. i wonder if were possible to run it on a video card independantly. its got the cpu, ram, bios (maybe thats where the os could go?). not really usefull but could be very interesting, to me at least. any thoughts?

its not going to help any thing, just seems like video cards are getting to the point that they are like computers in themselves.

somthing doesnt need to be usefull to be interesting. why would any one need to run linux on a cisco router? who knows but it has been done. so why try to get linux to run on a graphics card, because its there to be done.

Oh, I never said it's not interesting, I mean maybe some further optimization can come from it, but what I meant was that chances r comapnies wouldn't implement it unless it's useful.

what the bloody hell are you talking about?

a video card doesn't have anything close to a "CPU" in the x86 / sparc / ppc sense of the word. it also doesn't have any I/O or anything else that makes a computer a computer.

grpahics cards aren't becoming more like computers, they are more like part of a computer. modern graphics chips in the modern PC offload part of the rendering process so that you don't need a 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000mhz cpu to do doom III in software. there is no reason to try and make the GPU handle stuff like I/O and system memory and what have you.

learn a little more about hardware and OSes other than jsut that linux can be engineered onto lots of stuff.

did the bullys at school take your lunch money again? what the hell is your problem? its just a question of is it possible? i know damn well its not a typical processor, no in and out system? oh really... learn YOUR hardware before you blow up at some one for no reason.
