Why do players do that?

Hi,

yesterday I was participating in a nightmare Baal run (softcore), when
one of the party members turned hostile. He said "Sry" and soon after
killed all party members.

First I didn't care, and later was too surprised by the attack so I
didn't do anything to defend myself.

I was pondering about going back and dueling that guy, but decided
against, and I just left the game and joined another baal run.

But why do poeple do such things? It seems so senseless. Particularly in
softcore, where death is just annoying but not much of a problem?

It's mostly done to collect quick cash. It's not uncommon to get 500k
in one PK run...

A substantial percentage of humans will reveal themselves to be pricks,
given enough opportunity. It's apparently a species trait.

It seems so.

But strange things happen in D2.

A while ago I met a player who asked if he may kill my character. He
even gave me money ... he kept on asking, and finally I agreed. Strange
enough, after he killed my char, he teamed up and helped me in the game.

I tried to ask him for his motivations, but he gave no explanation. I
still wonder what that's been all about. And I wonder how other players
deal with such situations?

)

I guess I should be proud that someone wants to have a trophy of my
char? (= if he asks and pays for it, then it's of some value?)

Maybe he was a bounty-hunter?
If you have REALLY got on someone's nerves or PK'ed them often enough then
they can offer people items to kill you and bring them the ear as proof.
This is normally done to disrupt your games but ASKING if its Ok to kill you
kinda negates that.... BAD BOUNTY HUNTER!!! - lol

I have once joined a game with a Blizzard-sorc that was mainly barbarians...
stated "I need gold - your all gonna die now, sorry :(" and killed them all
for the gold they'd drop when I was in a hurry.... I did that in a few games
before someone killed me and I lost most of it again :p

I have been a bounty-hunter once which involves clicking games looking for
the name of somoene who is online but not a friend. I have made friends
with a target before too after finding my contractor deserved his PKing for
bringing teams of cows to this guy. I have also gave items to random people
and rewarded nice / helpful people with really good items... I even once
paid someone to kill them just to test my damage against people with
resists, etc

Ears dont normally give any worth, etc though unless your a bounty hunter...
and sell at 1gp ;)
Then again... killing isn't always about the ears... sometimes its just for
the information you get from killing someone or the gold they leave behind
:p

"All I ever needed to learn about life, I learned on BNet."

In an anonymous world, where there are no repurcussions for one's
actions, and power is simply EBay away, people show their true colors.

Every now and then though, someone lets you have that ultimate drop, or
gives you back something godly that popped from your corpse, so we
can't be ALL that bad.

I never PKed someone yet, and I try to play cooperative most of the
time, but I also have bad days and may have annoyed some people.

Well, I don't mind. Shall they be happy.

But I think you are wrong, now that I think of it, I found my own ear
near my dead body. So he left it, as he left all my stuff including my
gold ... he had promised not to take anything, but who believes in
promises of someone who asks if he may kill you?

Lucky you, that you said blizzard! I met a fire sorc who killed for the
same reason. If I meet her again, she'll be my first PK. I've now got a
character who should be competitive - I mean a lvl 84 sorc against a lvl
50 assassin was not really a fair start for a duel.

Did you consider asking them for gold?

That sorc also claimed to kill for gold. After she had killed me, and
some others, I asked why she was killing, and she said it was for the
gold. So I went to my stash and gave her some gold ... funnily she left
the game after that and didn't bother us further.

Gold is so easy to get, and pretty worthless because the interesting
things can't be bought anyways, so I don't understand why someone kills
for gold?

It seems some people take things way too seriously. This is a game, and
IMO players should rather work together than against each other.

If someone wants to test his character and see how his attacks works
against my character, he can tell me and we can try it. (I might refuse
this in hell games, if I'm close to a level, because the experience loss
annoys me).

IMO we are given language in order to talk to each other. There is
almost no problem that can't be solved by talking and a tiny bit of good
will.

What kind of information do you get? In softcore, you can't loot the
bodies, so you see nothing?

And even then, why don't you just ask if you want to know something?
Might be easier and more convenient for both parties than killing
someone and creating an new enemy who might seek revenge.

Not that Im aware of... but "String of ears" had me running around for about
2 years looking at how to cube one (I remembered someone saying you needed
items like an amulet & x amount of different ears) and I expected to cube a
"String of ears" amulet with resistances - lol

....Damn noobs (me) :p
