radeon 8500vs radeon9000 pro

i want to replace my old vodoo 3 3000.
im working on a p3 733
384mb
MSI 6199 0EM
windows 98se
i know my computer is weak...
i want to buy the new radeon 9000 pro or the radeon 8500.
im not going to oc my card...
which one is better?
will the card will work ok on my lame comuter??

The 128mb 8500 would be the better card and can be had at Best Buy for 199. However your cpu and memory will bottleneck it, you wont get the most out of it til you upgrade the rest of your system.

Both are good cards but the 8500 is generally superior to the 9000pro. You can have a look at THG's benchmarks starting <A HREF="http://www17.tomshardware.com/graphic/02q3/0207181/radeon9000-03.html" target="_new">here</A> and see for yourself.
Just go for the cheapest one, you'll have great improvement over your Voodoo card with any of them.

I have to agree with the previous post, go with the cheapest of the two unless you decide to upgrade the rest of your system.

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

One thing that the other posts haven't mentioned is that the Radeon 9000 is silent card. There's no fan (except for the pro model). Since you sadi that you weren't going to be overclocking, this might be a plus for you. A quiet system is nice to have as well.

first i want to thank all of u for the responses.
but i have a little problem.
i talked to a technician that told me that i may have a problem running a new card because my agp slot is agp*2.
is that true??
if so ill buy a card that works on agp*2...
can u tell me what is the best card that works on agp *2?
i think that the gf2 gts is a good choice no?
can i find 0ne with 64mb ddr?

check the stats on these cards but I think both will run happily on AGP 4x,2x or maybe even 1x (if you have a system that old)

I doubt you can find a GF2 with DDR-memory.
Your CPU might probably be a worse bottleneck then the AGP2x (which shouldn´t have such a negative effect).

i just wanted to add that ddr memory is not a must.
i can live with 64 mb sdram.
but i cant find gf2 that works on agp*2!!!
help,i need to but the card on monday...

Relax, breath... Dump the idea of getting a GF2, old card, no use. Buy the Radeon 8500. The rest of yourn PC might be a bottleneck but that can be fixed later.

Get a R8500LE over a R9000/PRO anyday. At say... newegg.com, they have great deals on R8500LEs that make them cheaper than the R9000s.
