well hi again

after reading all the information about the ati 9700 pro and the geforce 4 ti 4400, id figure id ask the experts about what they thought would be the best to go for..

i have a fairly modest system, nothing special, not really and was wondering what people might have recommended for me to get..
i live over in england the 9700 pro has just become avaiable now.. about £300 which i thought for the performance it was ok for value..
but in my current setup of an amd 1800, 512mbs of ddr 2100 ram, kr7 motherboard, im not so sure its the best for what i have at the minute.
could someone say what would be the best 'value' card for me to get so that im not really holding the card back with the rest of my system? im in to games playing mostly and i do do some video editing every now and again.. a friend has the same for of setup, but has a g4 ti 4200.. i believe hes very happy with it..
i was considering the ati mostly due to the looking of the graphics, as i did (for a short time) have a ati 8500 le.. it looked a lot better than my girl friends g3 ti200 and my current card im using, a g2 ultra...
any sugguestions as to what would be best? thanks for the help ppl!!

if all else fails... kick it and if it goes wrong, say it wasnt you...

pretty much the only thing that determins which card to get is how much are you willing to spend on it. That probably applys to all computer equipment but it definatly fits in here. the difference between ati and nVidia is merely preference. nVidia is a much larger company and in my eyes they make better cards but it is just who you feel is better. the new nVidia cards should be coming out in the next month or so, if you can wait that long. if you need a new card now and are willing to pay for it just go for the radeon 9700pro. because you don't have a 8x agp slot on that kr7 you may want to consider the gf4 ti4600 by MSI. the radeon 9700pro is a good card whether you have a 8x or 4x slot but you wouldn't get the max performance out of it if you don't have a 8x slot.

I´m afraid I have to disgaree with Folken a bit.

The difference between 4x and 8x shouldn´t be too bad.
I myself have a Athlon Xp 1800 and I´m going to get the 9700Pro.

The 9700 is capable of alot better graphics then the Ti4600
, limited to demos for know, but in the future... **drooling after a game with Displacement mapping**

NVidia is a pretty realiable manufacturer but ATI has the 9700 out now, while all we hear about the NV30 are some depressing rumours. Sure, ATI has had some driver issues but from what I hear the Catalyst 2.3 driver is doing just fine.

You can always upgrade your CPU later, the 9700Pro should last you awhile. And Folken, if you think about that the 9700 is a bit CPU limited by an 1800, why would you then want to wait for the NV30/GeForce 5?

Hey again, haven't talked to you in a while  .

The difference between AGP8X and 4X is minimal ~1-2%. Nothing to get a coronary over.

Yes preference is a big thing, but when 2 cards cost nearly the same (~15%) and one thrashes horribly the other, even the biggest fan's opinion may be swayed.

Also, if you're talking about NV28, it's just the GGF4s with AGP8X. If you're talking about NV30, that's been most likely delayed til next year.

That XP1800+ will limit that card, but for future upgradability, the R9700 seems to be the best at the moment.

To tell you the truth, the Ti4200 would probably be the best card for that system, or a Ti4400.

...And all the King's horses and all the King's men couldn't put my computer back together again...

Yes I know, the 1800 is a bit of a hold-back but I only got it recently and I´m not going to upgrade it right now.
But I have the KT333 chipset, so there´s room for an upgrade.
Are you saying a Ti4200 would be a good card for MY system or where you back to talking to Folken and Phill?
