PCI graphics upgrade?

I've got an old Celeron 500 box and I was just thinking about doing a cheap upgrade... A $50, give or take $10 kind of price range.

The motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot, so my only video choices are PCI.

It currently has a Savage4 PCI card. What I wanted to know is would upgrading to a PCI Geforce2MX or PCI Radeon 7000 be worth it from the Savage4? I know they're all pretty old by today's standards, but would there even be a noticable performance difference? When you're running a Celeron 500 box, any noticable performance difference is worth it. Heh heh.

But then I also think about how it's just a PCI slot, so can it even fully take advantage of a GF2MX or Rad7000? Or would that be the equivalent of running A P4b with PC100 RAM? Heh heh.

Thoughts, witticisms, and comments are appreciated.

Laughing at poor old Cel isn't. He's been through hell. I'm just happy that he's still alive.

you'll get some performance gain by upgrading to either the GF2 mx400 or the 7000, but since the bandwith limit of the PCI slot, the PCi version of those 2 cards performs lower than the AGP version.

With PCI cards, I haven't seen much improvement in performance since the TNT2. This is a bandwidth issue.

Thanks all. That was pretty much what I figured, but I wanted to make sure.

Hmm. Well, I guess I'll just keep the Savage4 in there then until it dies or unless I ever end up with a game that has some serious artifact problems using the Savage4.

Again, thanks everyone. :)

Why not try something such as Fast Card from http://www.pchardware.ro/Download/index.php?catid=8.

I think you could overclock your card to get the last drop of juice from it without costing you anything. After that...new cpu/mobo time I reckon!

You've probably already tried this, but why not update the drivers too?

Have fun!

I would except for the following reasons in order of least importance to most:
1) I haven't seen any programs like that which support the Savage4.
2) I could instead just overclock my PCI bus. (That is, if I ever want to ditch my PoS modem that won't run right when I do.)
3) At this point, my old PC is rather vital and I don't want to do anything to it that might shorten its lifespan.
