Can't believe nobody has posted anything about this film yet...and we call ourselves "nerds" . At least I do.

Anyway, anybody else seen this film yet? I just saw it. Now, I read the books and enjoyed them, but I certainly was never really that into them.

The film was really excellent, though. I went in with rather low expectations and I was happily stunned to find out that the film was quite good.

My friends comment: "The film feels exactly like the old Star Wars movies did, and how the new Star Wars movie didn't, but should."

I know exactly what he means, and I agree.

Anyways, anybody else see the flick yet? Opinions?

I have never read the Lord of the Rings.
When I was younger I like the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams.

I just got back from seeing it. A little slow in some parts and a lot of crying and hugging but overall I liked it. The special effects make Star Wars (the new one) look like South Park.
Ok maybe not that bad but there really is a lot of eye candy in this movie.

Thx & Cya

i think they should have done the hobbit first.

the hobbit would be much more effective going from book to film

I never read the books. Took my son to see it yesterday, and I found it to be about 3 hours too long. However, my son enjoyed it.

I saw it, I thought it was excellent. It didn't feel like 3 hours long. However, it is not a great adaptation of the book. To truly adapt the book to film, it would have to become a extensive TV miniseries or a 4 hour movie. I think some of the Tolkein purists will be upset. If you read the books then I suggest you go in with an open mind. This movie seems to be hit or miss, either people love it or hate it.

Ohh yeah and take it easy on the giant 40oz sodas, or you'll have to get up and run the the bathroom a couple of times.

I saw it on Friday night and then again on Saturday afternoon (Saturday was planned, Friday night was last-minute). I was neither diappointed nor impressed. The movie was pretty much exactly how I expected it to be. Elrond and Galadriel sucked, all the other characters were awesome. I watched X-Men last night, kinda strange to see Gandalf as Magneto :)

Anyhow, I agree with the comment comparing LoTR and Star Wars. They also should've done the Hobbit first, but they did a good job of (quickly) explaining what happened. Maybe they'll do it as a prequel. $45 million is nowhere near what the movie should've gotten, though.

Is the hobbit part of the same series as LOTR. I never knew that. What else is in the same series cos I read that the ending is sudden on LOTR and they were screening sequels.

The first one written was the Simarrilian (sp?). That's basically a history of Middle Earth, really boring. Then the Hobbit, and then the LoTR trilogy was written over a space of 12 years.

So theres five in all.

Do the same characters, senarios pop up throughout the series. Or is each one completely segregated from the last.

The Simallaricum and the Hobbit could be considered as stand alone books. The rest follow the Trilogy. However many of the characters from the Hobbit return in the Lord of the Rings.

LOTR hasn't made anything near what it should or hopefully will. Blame me if you will though. I would have seen it twice by now if it wasn't for finals and the fact that I want to finish reading the book before seeing it. I never seem to finish the book...

I bet that they could go and film if they so choose to. I also wish that they would now that Fellowship of the Rings is in the theaters. Since the numbers ($$$) are good they might just do it. It's all about the money.

I am quite pleased that they stuck fairly well to the book. A little off in the beginning and it went into the second book a little. I quess that you have to use discression. Also I never really understood how evil Suraman The White was. I thought that they did an excellent job with the characters, costumes, effects, etc.

i have never read any of the books, however ive seen the cartoons from when i was little. i thought they did one hell of a job with the overall movie. the best part of the movie are the scenes with liv tyler. god@#$#$m what a babe, jesus christ. but all in all it was a great movie. really liv tyler made the movie for me.

Calm down or I'll be forced to hose you off

Liv Tyler wasn't too bad, I'll have to agree. Galadriel wasn't that great, and Elrond plain sucked. All the other characters besides those two were awesome.

The elf Legolas was the coolest character in the movie. Elven archers never seem to tranfer over to movies well but this was an exception. He kicks ass with that bow.

Elrond wasnt all that bad. I think the way they used Gimli the dwarf as the comic relief is what bothered me. But that's only comparing his book character to the movie character.

Reply to Pettytheft

I don't think the book and movie Gimlis were too much different.

I agree, Legolas was pretty good with that bow. He had to have practiced for a while to get that fast. I loved it when he stabbed the orc through his eye slit with an arrow, then shot the same arrow into another orc. Hmm...maybe that was a stunt double. Pretty impressive, though.

Well, I finally saw it. What a movie! Very impressive. Ya, I know it doesn't totally stick to the book (they kinda screwed up the timeline from Hobbiton to Rivendell), but it's still probably the best book-to-movie adaptation I've ever seen. I loved the cave troll. When do the next ones come out?

Gotta have the box DVD set, mmmmmm.

I might go ahead and buy the individual dvd's then the boxed set later.

They didn't really specify the timeline, but they left out Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Downs.

I'll have to agree on Yahiko on that one. Individual DVD's as well as the boxed set, Director's Cut, Special Edition, Collector's Edition, etc.
