9700 Pro worth it for AMD XP 1700

I'm really struggling with upgrading my CPU and MB or video card. Current setup:

AMD XP 1700+
Shuttle AK31 (KT266A) MB
512 MB 2100 DDR RAM
GeForce 3
Win XP

I play UT 2003, NOLF 2, most other current games. Has anyone tried the ATI 9700 Pro with a similar setup? Did you notice a huge increase in performance? Does 9700 Pro require a very fast processor and faster RAM? Thanks.

The GeForce 3 should be alright for now.

My advice: Upgrade the motherboard and the CPU for now, then save up for a NV30. The RAM has less effect and should be sufficient. If you want to stick with AMD then get a 2600+, you´ll need the performance with a NV0.

I disagree, he'll see far more of a performance improvement in games with an R9700Pro than a processor and motherboard upgrade.

I might have expressed myself in a bad way. Yes, a 9700Pro would give quite a boost, but it will be slightly limited by that 1700. If he upgrades the rest of the system now and get´s a NV30 a few months after it´s out he will have a kick ass system. You do agree that a GeForce 3 probably handles todays games just fine?
