Help me decide on a GeForce4 Video Card

Hi,

I currenly have a Duron 1200Mhz, 256MB 133mhz SDRam, Geforce2 MX system.

Looking at doing a quick upgrade (mainly for games).

I think an upgrade to video card, is where it's at. So I've got two choices I've been looking at:
Pixelview Ge-Force4 MX440 64MB 5ns DDR -> NZ$135 (approx US$67)
Triplex Ge-Force4 Ti4200 (250/550MHz) 64MB 4ns DDR -> NZ$279 (approx US$140)

I'm just wondering if the purchase of a Ti4200 will be worth it if the rest of the system is so [-peep-] and cannot keep up with it? I don't think I'd be using the Ti4200 to its full potential? It's double the price. Will I really see a substantial performance gain over an MX440? I'm guessing I'll almost double my frame rate with a MX440 over the Geforce2 MX...

So what do you reccon I should do? (Think there's a chance it'll run Doom 3 on low settings?)

Thanks in advance!

Don't know why your looking at that Ti4200...IT'S A RIP-OFF!!! Here's a good card by MSI @ $120 + shipping:

I know it's 64MB, the 64MB version usually runs just as fast as the 128MB card if not faster. And yes, your system will be able to use this card to it's full potential. And it's a way better card than the GF4 MX you're looking at.

For the love of GOD ! don't buy a GF4 MX !!!!

NVIDIA is really ripping ppl off with that name calling stunt.

GF4 mx = boosted gf2

just forget gf4 mx exist actually...

ti4200 is a good choice !

I'm fully aware that a GF4 MX is based on GF2. None the less it does have upgraded technology not present in the GF2.

Looking at http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/02q2/020418/vgacharts-05.html - 3D Mark 2001 benchmark scores:
GF2 MX -> 2813 (which I've currently got)
GF4 MX440 -> 5653
GF4 Ti4200 -> 8882

I'm almost doubling my FPS with the GF4 MX440 over the GF2 MX... And this is dirt cheap.

I do plan on getting a complete new system at a later date. This just has to hold be over. So you still reccon the GF4 Ti4200?

http://www.buyxtremegear.com/msinvidti464.html don't seem to sell to anywhere outside the US!?!? This does seem cheaper than the Ti4200 I was looking at though...

If I'm not mistaken the MX version doesn't have a pixel or vertex shader built in (not too sure because I don't bother reading anything about Nvidia MX series cards). I run a ti 4200 and love it. There's no way I would ever recommend the MX version as I once bought a GF2 MX 400 64 Mb card assuming that it wouldn't be that bad...I upgraded to a GF2 Ti within two weeks.

Try to find a GF 3 Ti 200 (Ti 500 would be better) if the price of the ti 4200 is a little too steep. I wouldn't waste my money on the 128 Mb version of the ti 200 though. Check with your buddies I just dumped a Ti 200 for $50.00 US to my bro-in-law. Had to have the ti 4200 lol.

Ti4200 or Ti500 Are more then good for a while and they are overclockable to....

The MX is a budget chip and is ok if u dont play games but if u do play games dont touch it.

Just wondering... At which processor speed would you decide a GF4 Ti4200 graphics card a waste?

e.g. It's not worth it if you have a Duron 600mhz??? i.e. you might as well save money and go for a MX?

Your thoughts?

It mostly depends of the game : With Max Payne, you could have about the same FPS w/ a Duron 800 and an Athlon 1.2, both fitted w/ a Geforce3, but w/ Comanche 4, the results are the same w/ a GF4 or Radeon 9700, if both fitted w/ the same CPU.
To me, I wouldn't buy a GF4 Ti if I had under 800MHz. Of course, it's my own POV !

I recommend the GF4 ti. Sure it'll be bottlenecked by your CPU in most games, but you'll still see a larger boost than with the MX.

If you're planning on upgrading later, why not buy a good vid card now and use it in the new machine as well?

By the time I upgrade to a new system (3-9 months) I think I'd might aswell buy a new better video card at the same time... Thus I'm not looking at it that way. I just simply want the best bang for buck for the current system...

To maximize the use of your current system while still saving money I would buy a GF3 Ti 200. you'll have to replace it if your upgrade your CPU/Mobo but this will give you the most bang for your buck in this config. (I used to own one myself but it wasn't feasible with this CPU).
