Hi.My parents' computer has stopped booting but unfortunately i can't fix it because i am away at university.Basically it halts when loading windows and says that ntfs.sys is missing or corrupted.I talked them through using the windows xp (professional) cd to try to repair the windows install but unfortunately it won't run for some reason. When setup starts, before you even get the opportunity to repair the windows installation, setup halts at one of the files (something DMIO related as far as i could gather) and then says 'press any key to reboot'.
A repair would be ideal as they have lots of photos etc on the hd they would like to keep.
Is there anything that can be done?
Thanks in advance for any help.

no matter how hard you try, you can't polish a turd. :]

For data recovery I recommend to take out the drive and install it in another comp as slave. Copy over all important data, then format the drive. Put it back and make a fresh Windows install.
