This all may be moot, since BNET is going to perform maintenance on
their servers, but for the last 2 months (since I've been playing on
ladder), I've been seeing an annoying behavior:
In ladder SC games on USEast, makes no difference the level of
difficulty, some games start to lag. It's not lag which is due to packet
loss, as ping times don't go up, but because the server process is freezing.
After 5 or more instances of this kind of lagging, the server drops my
connection. I can't connect to *any* games, the one I was in, or new
games, for at least a few minutes.
I don't use maphack, I don't dupe, etc. But my client can't connect to
any games. Any attempt after this results in the error "Failed to join
game" after some time of trying.
Does anyone know what's going on?
My theory is that the server is thrashing (virtual memory is maxed),
since it seems the game doesn't really progress. Eventually, the
computer (or server process) crashes (or is killed/rebooted by a
watchdog script).
If a router or something was overloaded, then I think you'd be blacked
out - I have experienced this kind of lag and it's not the same, in
router bottleneck lag, you tend to die. In game-freeze lag, I rarely
have died.
All lag aside, I'm curious why I can't join any games for a few minutes
after the game crashes.

After the 1.11 patch, I am getting better fps readings from bnet, my voodoo
with glide bumped up from around 60 to over 100, my ati 9200 AIW using 2d
bumped up from 25-30 to over 40. So something they did is right.
Some of the can't join business may be an anti-dupe measure, if they can
keep people that are deliberately crashing the servers from rejoining then
perhaps they can stop some of the crash-duping. The rest of us that are
sending malformed packets because of isp issues instead of using hacks are
just lumped in with them.
Here Cox Broadband will occasionally just barf when usage gets heavy, I got
a connection innterrupted message today just after I downloaded the patch
and hadn't seen one of those since the dupers filled thier stashes back
months ago.
