I have a question about my voodoo 3 3000 pci. I average 4-5fps in CS and wanted to know if this is normal. Would it be different if I had the agp version?
Um, that really depends. That is a very old card by today's standards, but not the worst card in the world (that was in the generation and class of the TNT 2's comparably, though it did not peform as well).
If you are trying to run the game in 1024x768 in Direct3D with forced 4x anti-aliasing, you can certainly expect it to be 3-4 FPS..... or even less
You can try lowering the level of detail, not using Half Life's/CS high models, running it in 800x600, OpenGL, etc... it might be tolerable then.
If your motherboard has an AGP slot, you should look into getting a modern card. Though, if it is only AGP 1.0 (it only supports up to 2x), some of the newer cards require a 2.0 or AGP Pro slot (running off 2 and 4x).
For the most part (except for newer games like Morrowind) you should be ok with an 866 P3 and 316MB RAM. You do need to get a better video card though.
Yes, but an AGP version of a Voodoo 3 isn't going to help your predicament at all. Get a modern card like a 4x GeForce 4 Ti 4200. You can find an OEM version (though I really don't recommend OEM for vid cards, but if you are tight on money.....) for like $150 if you shop around.
This will leave you with the ability to play current games, and prepared for future ones.
If you want something at least reasonable for modern times, and are still tight on money, you might be able to find an OEM based on the GeForce 4 MX 420 chipset for like $80 if you shop around (I've seen some low prices recently).
I'm sorry to disappoint you if you want another Voodoo (they were good cards by a good company), but 3DFX went out of business YEARS ago (actually I'm pretty sure their company was bought over by Nvidia :-(
You still might be able to find a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP around somewhere - but these cards have really become more collectors items by loyal 3DFX fans and technology museums :-S If there were some left overs that were never sold at some small retailers or something (that have been sitting on a dusty self for a year), you might be able to find one (or possibly online at some rare place). If they wanted to sell you it at regular price, you could get a good deal.
But some games won't even support 3DFX/Voodoo cards like Ghost Recon. Also, the card will not support beyond DirectX 7. Performance wise it is about on par with a GeForce 2 (though with tweaking utilities, which you find find at www.voodoofiles.com - you could get it possibly around the level of a GeForce 3, performance wise anyway - features like pixel shading will never be available in such cards due to their BIOS and GPUs)
It's time to move on and upgrade. I think you could get higher fps with your card in an old game like CS, but it'll still be pathetic. Don't you want to play a new game? Don't you want it to look good and play right? Spend $50 and get something that at least isn't ancient with no drivers or support.
I bought that card 4 or 5 years ago. Say some kind words, bury it in the backyard, and move on.
P4 2.53
Radeon 9700pro
1 gig 3000/333mhz ram
80 gig western digital 7200rpm hd etc.
I just wanted to network the two so I could play some games with my friends. I guess i'll spend 60-90 on a gf3 ti200 or somthing like it sometime soon.
That'll be a nice setup. You'll have a lot more fun playing with friends with another card in there. I still have my old computer with the voodoo card networked and it really won't run anything worth playing. I'll still play UT, but if you want to play new games, it's worth spending the extra money.
No, its not normal. I had a Duron 700, 129 MB RAM and a Vodoo 3 2000. Counter Strike ran very smooth. It was running in Direct 3D, and either on 800x600 or 1024x768.
Its supposed to go very smooth, since its Half-Life. HF needed a 166Mhz comp and a 8MB GFX card I think.
But of course it does..!!
Otherwise you could only play 3DFX games.
OPEN-GL is new for Vodoo cards. My Vodoo didnt come with support for it, I had to get the Mini-GL patch.
