Hello I am debating weather to buy an HIS ATI Radeon 9000 with 128MB of DDR RAM OR an Nvidia Geforce 4 MX420 with 64mb DDR RAM. I know the ATI is probably better but how much better? What are the differances/ Anyway any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

If it's a Radeon 9000 PRO then yes, it is better. If it is a Radeon 9000 non-pro, then it is a bit more difficult to decide. http:// www.tomshardware.com/graphic/02q3/0207181/index.html Toms article had a good review, and a direct comparison of the 2 cards.

The MX420 has SDR not DDR RAM, so even the Radeon 9000 will be faster. The Radeon 9000 series has better IQ performance, and features than the GF4MX series.

The MX420 is a terrible card. In fact, it's junk. It's so bad, I wouldn't even consider it for playing "hearts" let alone 3D games. In fact, some boards have better INTEGRATED video (nForce2). It's that bad. Maybe worse.

The 9000 is a low performance card, but I suspect it could hold it's own against an MX440.

Spend a little more for a GF4 Ti 4200. That way you won't have to upgrade again in two weeks after you realize that the above mentioned vid cards just can't handle the games you want to play.

Buy the ATI card. After what Nvidia did to 3DFX, and the ppl that had VooDoo cards, I wouldn't own one if they gave it to me. When Nvidia helped put 3DFX out of business, they got all their stuff, ie, chips, manufacturering stuff, etc. Then, they didn't even offer to support the VooDoo cards out there with drivers! At that time, I owned 4 VooDoo cards, 2 VooDoo 3 3000's and 2 VooDoo 5's. No thanks to Nvidia, I had to resort to "hacked" drivers to run under Windows XP, which are marginal at best. I guess Nvidia figured all us VooDoo card owners would rush out and buy Nvidia chipset cards. NO SO HERE! ATI forever for me! Screw Nvidia, and the horse they rode in on!

The Ti4200 and ATI 8500 are comparable values, with perhaps the edge going to the 8500. I favor the Ti4200 but that's only because I use it and its the best card I've had.
