It seems a lot of accounts have been banned last night, and people suspect
it might be due to Maphack and something else called Easymap which I have
never heard of before. Has something similar happened on the other realms?

dont know if it happend on other realms also... but there isnt an official
MH by mousepads yet..
and they say that in the maphack and easymap that are out there are
trojans..

I've heard of easymap... but was also told that it contained a keylogger.
I didnt bother downloading it to check though as the only maphack I would
trust (for offline play, obviously is Mousepads which isn't available yet

No idea. I tried to join the European server (at 10 pm local time,
which might be 8 GMT) but got a message that the server cannot be
connected to, check your internet settungs, yadda yadda.
I changed to US east and created another character there, and played
some time, then returned tu Europe, and could join a game and brought
my puny Lamion past Andy.
Maybe the "can not connect" was a side effect of this cleaning action,
or there was no ban, but people mistook the problem that they could not
connect, for a ban.

Mousepads website has a forum, and everyone there is saying not to use
Easymap or any MH out now. All either have trojans or no anti-detection at
all.

Good. They deserve to be banned if they use any kind of cheat or hack or
ANY third party add-on. Use whatever you like at home, but if you want to
play online then it should be a level playing field for all, not just for
all that have gone out and downloaded this proggy or that one.
Just my 2 cents.
Now don't forget to give me my change. --

What I heard in a game this morning was that USEast had so many players
banned the new leader on the HC ladder used to be #8. The top 7 chars got
banned, along with untold others.
Serves them right, if it was up to me, they should ban keys for a full
ladder season if found using hacks.

I am on Europe, and tried easymap, it is not as good as Mousepad's,
but it was available. I tried some other tools from a site as well, a
scammer,
that didnt work and a leftclick-hack, that allows you to use all skills also
with
the left mouse, which is convenient for a blizzard-teleport combination.
The scammer was merely a test, I doubt if I ever would have tried a scam.
This morning my cd-key has been revoked. Thus, I am now banned. A good
time to leave Diablo II, still eager, but now handicapped.

I saw lots of chatting about "easymap" while in the chat channels last
night. Since I don't use hacks, I wasn't really interested in learning
more.
If I had to guess, I would say that Bliz is using D2 as a staging
ground to test new anti-hacking and anti-botting software. It only
makes sense. They can develop the tools in this legacy arena before
moving them to the more lucrative pay-to-pay areas like WoW. As long as
legit players aren't caught up in the crossfire, this is a good thing.

I hope they're spending their energy on designing network protocols for
the game such that duping, etc. is much harder, or even impossible to do.
It's like all these anti-spam tactics -> the basic problem is a design
flaw - no authentication of the true sender of a message in the SMTP. If
half the energy spent on fighting spam were channeled into solving the
design problems (or agreeing on a solution), spam wouldn't be an issue
today.
Same goes for anti-virus techniques wrt security and design... We invest
energy into detecting/fixing symptoms rather than curing the cause of
the problem (insecure, bad design).
As for anti-botting, that's a tougher problem to solve, but trying to
"spot the bot" as opposed to making bots difficult to make work is a
waste of time as far as I'm concerned.
Anti-botting has already been addressed for at least one network game -
google up netrek and you'll see different ways it was attempted to be
solved. 1) RSA keys on the client binaries - any modification to client
binaries would prevent connection to server - perhaps this is already
done with D2. 2) on occasion, the human player would have to respond to
a "challenge message" trying to determine if he was a clueful player
(and that he read messages, key for team play). This was a way to assure
that the user was not a robot. These technologies are already used for
other online verifications systems.

Yes. It's amazing that there are players out there, that are... eh,
were using "add-ons" to climb the ladder in a few days up to their
80ies, and really expected to stay there.
I can only recommend not to use anything on bnet that doesn't come
with the package(s) of the game (Classic or LoD).

babelfish.altavista.com tranlates this as:
Ethereal spirit armament flame river hell hoellenschmiede

Yes.

True, but I doubt it still. I never have before, this would have been my
third season.

According to http://d2sector.net/, at least the latter might very well
be trojanized. By the creator of the tool himself, that is. Mousepad
didn't include trojans, but of course, there are copies in the net
which aren't from his homepage, and those won't be safe at all.
Maybe a short look with a hex editor might hint at what is inside such
a program.

Yup, it probably will.
I normally download known trojans to have a look at their code & how they
work but couldn't be arsed with this one. Im getting a bit sick of the
badly written trojans for D2 password grabbing :¬/
If its a maphack then it modifies D2 internal memory & coulda injected your
passwords in a hidden message to another character / bot on bNet chat that
would log them... but due to the amount of people that knew about it... the
way it sent the passwords had to be ALOT more lame :¬/
