I'm wanting to purchase a card for my HP Athlon machine to upgrade since the current one sucks. I'm looking for something for a PCI slot...around $100..can go up to $140. And supports Directx 8.1. I dont want to have to upgrade for awhile :). So if anyone has any advice on what card to purchase please please please share with me. I was thinking of a Geforce4 MX. But I have seen both good and bad.

Thanks!

The performance of PCI video card is limited by the PCI bus bandwidth. Most newer game will not play smoothly with a PCI video card.

Raedon9000pro pci is good, and you will be able to pick it up for cheaper than the price you listed.

GF4MX hardware doesnt support DX 8.1, it is still a DX7 part...

Note: a GF4MX is a GF2MX on steroids, faster but if you wanna DX8.1 then get a ti4200 or higher Nvidia-wise...

ATI-wise, about 20% slower than an AGP card, but a 9000 is a DX8.1 hardware part...

no-one shouts louder than someone who is being ignored, or in the case of techies, to be heard over the noise of their PC's ;-)
